885 WTNT32 KNHC 262037 TCPAT2 BULLETIN Post-Tropical Cyclone Gonzalo Advisory Number 8 NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL AL072026 800 PM CVT Sat Sep 26 2026 ...GONZALO NO LONGER A TROPICAL CYCLONE... ...THIS IS THE FINAL ADVISORY... SUMMARY OF 800 PM CVT...2100 UTC...INFORMATION ---------------------------------------------- LOCATION...19.3N 23.3W ABOUT 180 MI...290 KM N OF SAL CABO VERDE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...40 MPH...65 KM/H PRESENT MOVEMENT...NNW OR 345 DEGREES AT 7 MPH...11 KM/H MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...1005 MB...29.68 INCHES WATCHES AND WARNINGS -------------------- There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 800 PM CVT (2100 UTC), the center of Post-Tropical Cyclone Gonzalo was located near latitude 19.3 North, longitude 23.3 West. The post-tropical cyclone is moving toward the north-northwest near 7 mph (11 km/h) and this general motion is forecast to continue through the weekend, with a slow down and turn to the west-northwest expected by early next week. Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts. Additional weakening is forecast, and the post-tropical cyclone is expected to dissipate over eastern Subtropical Atlantic by the early to mid portion of next week. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 185 miles (295 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1005 mb (29.68 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells generated by Gonzalo are expected to affect portions of the Cabo Verde Islands this evening before diminishing Sunday. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local weather office. NEXT ADVISORY ------------- This is the last public advisory issued by the National Hurricane Center on this system. Additional information on this system can be found in High Seas Forecasts issued by the National Weather Service, under AWIPS header NFDHSFAT1, WMO header FZNT01 KWBC, and online at ocean.weather.gov/shtml/NFDHSFAT1.php $$ Forecaster Papin
Forecast Discussion — the forecaster's reasoning
000 WTNT42 KNHC 262038 TCDAT2 Post-Tropical Cyclone Gonzalo Discussion Number 8 NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL AL072026 800 PM CVT Sat Sep 26 2026 The bulk of the convective activity associated with Gonzalo has become even further separated from its center this afternoon. This increased separation is due to strong southwesterly vertical wind shear, diagnosed at nearly 50 kt this afternoon by UW-CIMSS. In addition, water vapor imagery shows very dry air infiltrating the low-level circulation, limiting convective redevelopment. Given that the nearest convection is now more than 100 n mi away from the center, lacks sufficient organization, and that these very unfavorable conditions are likely to persist, Gonzalo is being declared a post-tropical cyclone in this advisory. The maximum sustained winds remain 35 kt, assuming some higher winds exist in the convection displaced well northeast of the center. The post-tropical cyclone is still moving off to the north-northeast at 045 degrees at 6 kt. Downshear convection may still attempt to tug the center more northward over the next 12-24 h. However, as this activity diminishes, a shallow low-level ridge should steer the remnant low more west-northwest during the early portion of next week before dissipation. This is the final NHC advisory on Gonzalo. Transit counts are gate-line crossings computed hourly from ChartNav's own live AIS network (terrestrial receivers; coverage varies by zone — the coverage figure above says how complete the picture is, and reporting gaps are only flagged for vessels that were underway and stopped reporting globally). Baselines are rolling medians of complete days. Numbers may differ from weekly satellite-AIS datasets such as IMF PortWatch, which lag by several days but see areas terrestrial receivers cannot.
